"I notice that you use the word "find" instead of, say, "construct" or "build". Would you say that these "truths" are out there to be discovered? That these truths exist independent of man or woman? Or must man or woman interact with the material to construct a truth?"
I had to chew on that a few days. First, I love being called out for word choice, because I do it all the time to others - I so deserve it! And it shows a bit of carelessness on my part, because I obviously didn't consider the implications of using the word "find." My first reaction was to say, "that was a typo!" But, I knew there was more to it than simply exchanging the word. Maybe, it was one of those Freudian slips. In any event, having pondered the idea a few days, I've come to my own conclusion on the matter.
I would have to say that I believe that truth is both found and constructed. I know that sounds like a cop-out, but I think it fits. I can only explain my position through an analogy:
If we think about the concept of gravity, it exists whether or not we are aware of it. Gravity is. We know this to be so, because in the absence of gravity, there would be no chance for civilization to exist - we'd simply fly off the earth should it disappear. Prior to Newton's "discovery" of gravity, it existed, and people "knew" it existed through experience, but it was unknown, because it was not named. In all reality, Newton should be hailed for naming the thing that was existent, yet non-existent in the minds of humans, because there was no word for it. No one had previously described it. So, gravity is both a truth that exists independent of human interaction, and a truth that is constructed. The construct comes through language, which is also constructed. Gravity is invisible, we can't smell it, touch it, taste it, or hear it - but, we feel it. Still, for the majority of human existence, it was unknown because nobody named it.
If we can't name the "thing" we wish to describe, does it exist? Through language we construct the world around us. Whether or not truth exists independent of man or woman, we still use language to construct the idea of the truth by naming it. What is truth without words to describe it?
This, of course, is all my opinion. And until I am challenged to view it from another point of view, I'm sticking to it.
