Chapter 1
Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it all...
Spice things up, put some excitement back into your marriage, the article said to surprise him with new lingerie, Tony says I’m not spontaneous, that I never wear anything sexy, he’s sick of the yoga pants and the jeans and tee’s, I think he’s sick of me, he says he’s happy, but he’s always working, okay, so I’ve got the dress, the article said a short jacket, but I can’t drive around in skimpy lingerie under a jacket, what if I get stopped by the cops for something, oh, God, I’d die, and what if someone is at the office, I would feel like an idiot, I mean it’s bad enough running around in a thong and a dress that I wouldn’t wear in front of anyone else, but at least I’m dressed, and the heels, oh god, I hope I don’t fall, what if I fall, what if I walk in his office and trip on my own feet, he’s going to wonder how he ever married such a foolish person, I don’t know why he did, it's been ten years, and I feel like a stranger to him, I don’t know what the hell I’m doing, I think he loves work more than he loves me, it's his new wife, and we never even had a baby, and our lives are just routine, I'm home alone, and all he ever does is work, he’ll probably get mad at me for disturbing him, maybe I should turn around, go home, we’re like strangers, when was the last time we made love?… No, he’s been asking for spontaneous, he's been asking for excitement, you’re giving him spontaneous, this is what he wants, it’s going to be great, don’t forget to pick-up the Chinese, it’s his favorite dinner, I hope I’m dessert…

And then some you don't want...
Mae arrived at Tony’s office. She felt the thrill of nervous excitement pulse through her body, and a little panic set in. She took the elevator to the third floor. The doors opened and then they closed. Mae was frozen in fear. “What’s wrong with you?” she whispered to herself. Then pushed the “door open” button and stepped out of the elevator. She looked down the hall and saw that the door to Tony’s office was closed, but a glow of soft light snuck out from beneath the door. He was still working.
“Okay, breathe. At least nobody is here to see you in this ridiculous outfit.” She muttered to herself while walking cautiously down the hall, careful not to trip in her too-high heels. She slipped into the ladies room on her way, for one last check.
Mae looked herself over in the mirror and reapplied her cherry red lipstick. She felt foolish, again. Maybe, it was the fine lines she saw forming around her eyes; maybe, it was because she smelled like Kung Pao Chicken, or maybe, it was the piece of cabbage stuck in her teeth from the egg roll she sampled at the Chinese restaurant.
“Damn it!” Mae spotted the food in her teeth and used a business card to remove it. She tugged at the skirt of her dress until the seams were straight; “This looked a lot sexier on that model. Stop it, Mae, go- he’s going to love you. Like our college days.”
As Mae approached Tony’s office she could hear strange sounds coming from the other side. Guttural sounds. “What the heck is he listening to?” She paused just a moment, then heard a high-pitch squeal from the other side, “Tony!”
Mae felt a wave of fear come up from the bottom of her gut. Her hand shook. She opened the door slowly, quietly. Her breath stopped when she saw the horrific sight. Tony, bent over his desk with his $500 trousers around his ankles, was planted between the legs of a young and gorgeous woman, not a day over 22. She was sprawled across the mahogany desk Mae bought Tony when he opened his business. Tony’s mouth was buried in the red-head’s neck, and her legs wrapped his body like a serpent. Murmurs and animal cries sprang from hot-pink Angelina Jolie lips. Mae watched large, firm breasts, no doubt silicone; heave up and down with Tony’s movements.
It was Tony’s cries, “Jenna,” that finally shocked Mae out of her trance. Igniting the spontaneity and excitement both Mae and Tony had longed for. She dropped the bag of Chinese.
“Mae!” Tony jumped out of his pleasure and stood-up, limp and deflated. He moved so quickly he threw the red-head off balance; she attempted to recover but fell off the desk anyway.
“What the f*ck is going on?” She caught a glimpse of Mae through the strands of her long, fiery hair. “Who’s that? Tony! Who the f*ck is she?” Tony hastily pulled up his pants. The red head tugged Tony’s arm and demanded an answer.
“Stop it.” He could barely speak. He pushed Jenna, the little home wrecker, behind him, shielding Mae’s eyes from her perfect little body.
“Wh, whatare you doing here?” His voice was raspy, breathless.
Mae didn’t answer. Instinct took over, she had to get away. She ran away from the scene as quickly as she could, tripping just once on her way out of the building.

And you, bring me to my knees...
"Mae, it's Kate. Please, pick up the phone..."
"Mae, c'mon honey, talk to me. I'm here for you."
Nothing compares to you...
"Mae, PICK UP THE PHONE!"

Mae woke to a pounding sound. She wasn’t sure if it was the wine or the Vicodine, but her head was vibrating. It took a moment for her to realize that the sound she heard was coming from outside her head. Someone was pounding on the front door.
“Mae, I know you’re in there! I’m going to break this freaking door down if you don’t answer.” Kate's raspy voice was three pitches higher than normal.
“Go away.” Mae’s whimper was impossible for Kate to hear from the front door. The pounding continued, so Mae dragged herself out of bed and answered the door.
“You look like shit!” Kate always blurted out whatever thought she had going in her pretty little head. “What did you do, beat yourself up? Geeze, your eyes couldn’t get any puffier.”
“Thanks, love you, too.” Mae began crying again.
“C’mon, stop this. He isn’t worth it.” Kate rubbed Mae’s back. “We need to get you out of this house.”
“I can’t go anywhere! Look at me!” Mae was offended by the thought.
“Well, I did expect you to shower first.” Kate tried to get a smile out of Mae, but it wasn’t working.
Mae started cyring again. “What did I do? Why? Why did he do this?” Mae pleaded for an answer.
“Honey, he’s a man – men are dogs – enough said. You did nothing.” Kate pulled Mae towards the bathroom. “Now get your ass in that shower, I’m taking you out for coffee. And use soap, you may want to wash the hair twice, too. I’ll try to find a pair of dark glasses to hide those red puff balls you’re sporting.”
“Thanks.” Mae wasn’t exactly laughing.

The girls went to a local diner and found a booth in the back because Mae didn’t want to be seen.
“You’ve got to eat something, you lost two cup sizes since the last time I saw you. You're flirting with reverting back to training bras."
“Why don’t you just stab me and put me out of my misery?”
Kate’s brows drew together, “There isn’t time for that. Look, I brought you here to set you straight. You need to get out of this and start getting your life back. You're behind on the plans for the Towers account. And Bob Grady's been phoning me every day to ask me what’s going on with the office on Third Street. My ass is in a sling, and I don’t have time for your depression. You need to snap out of it, right now! Before we lose these accounts.”
Tears rolled down Mae's face.
“C’mon, you know I love you, but this is our business! You're the dependable one, and now you're falling apart and everything is going to hell!”
“I’m sorry, I just can’t, I can’t think about building plans or Bob Grady, I just can’t.”
“Mae, we’re going to lose everything. I bought us one more week.”
“Okay, okay.”
“One week, Mae. Get it done, please. So, I can get him off my back.”
“I thought that’s how you liked them.” Mae couldn’t help getting a shot in. “How do you expect me to work when I just lost Tony?”
Mae was annoyed now. “What am I supposed to do? I don’t know what to do! I can’t get out of bed, and you’re worried about building plans!”
“Honey, working is the best thing you can do. It’ll keep your mind off things.” Kate tried to soothe her, but it wasn’t helping. And the tears came again. “Listen, he is a bastard. You don’t need him, Mae, you don’t need him. Look at me. No man – no problems.”
“No man? You sleep with anything that walks.”
“But, I don’t marry ‘em. That’s your problem Mae, that little ring there – it’s a noose. Now look at you, you’re all broken up and there’s a million men out there.”
“I don’t want a million men, I want Tony!” Mae couldn't stand another moment. "You don't understand. I'm going home."
"Mae! Don't forget the plans."

"Mae! Don't forget the plans."
Dare you to move...
"Did you get the plans?"
"Yeah, thanks for emailing them, at the very last moment. I love thrillers."
Mae was thinking about hanging-up on her, but she had too much to tell Kate.
“He filed for divorce.”
“WHAT? Already?” Kate was shocked. “Bastard.”
“He said he wants a quick divorce, he wants to marry the goddess.”
“He called her a goddess?”
“NO!
“How do I stop it? How do I get him back?” Mae was pleading - again. All she did was plead, bargain, and beg these days, but G-d wasn't listening.
“Honey, why would you want to? He’s a son of a bitch. You should be furious!”
“I need him.”
“No, you don’t.”
“What am I without Tony? I’m not Tony’s wife anymore. I’m just Mae.”
“Mae, you're a beautiful, sexy, smart woman – well, not right now, but normally – you don’t need him. You’re luckier than most women. You’ve got your own business with an amazing partner, so you don’t need his money, either.”
“But, I…”
“Knock it off. I’m going to show you what you’ve been missing. It’s time to stop crying. You want him back, you gotta let him see you out there, having a good time.
"Oh yeah, a good time. Can't wait."
"Look, there are plenty of men out there who would love to pick-up where Tony left off. And, I know Tony, he says he doesn’t want you, but he thinks you’re going to wither away alone. Die a slow death with thirty cats."
"I'm allergic to cats."
"Wait til he sees you living it up with some hottie, several hotties.”
“Oh, right, because hotties are interested in soon-to-be forty..."
"You're thirty-four."
"...washed up has-beens who can't even keep their husbands out of some red-headed Barbie doll's bed.”
"You should be pissed."
“I am!”
“Then stop crying! Get mad, Mae – get mad. Then get even. And I bet you, you’re not going to want him back.”
"Yes, I will. I am mad, sometimes, but it doesn't last. Because I miss him, I just want him back."
"Well, there's only one way, you've got to make him jealous. And you can't do that until you're furious, because you can't go around meeting men with those weepy, blood-shot eyes you been sportin."
"Help me, Kate."
"Just start thinking about how horrible he is, what kind of a jerk dumps his wife like this? You've been DUMPED!"
"Dumped, DUMPED. For a big-busted, plastic, twit!"
"Right! Now, just keep telling yourself that every day..."

I hate everything about you...
“Kate, I’ve been thinking.... you’re right. I’m ready to do whatever you say so I can make Tony jealous. I only have three months, I got notice of our hearing date today. Three months, to undo all of this. Call me back.”
